Gülcan Balci was born in Adana/Turkey in 1971. She grew up with her parents, grandparents and great-grandmother (106 years) in a four-generation house. From an early age, Gülcan was interested in her grandmother's work; she was a respected woman in her village. She had extensive knowledge of herbal medicine and was always consulted by the villagers when it came to healing, alleviating or preventing illnesses and ailments. She always had a preparation made from medicinal plants at hand. With increasing age, Gülcan's interest in herbal medicine increased and her grandmother gave her a wide range of specialist knowledge. Gülcan was affectionately called "little herbal witch" by her mother.
